Des Moines, IA  Digital University Archivist (Full-time)

At DMU you will make a meaningful contribution to the dynamic future of Medicine and Health Sciences. DMU is seeking a Digital University Archivist. Responsible for the development, organization, and coordination of all university archives and special collections materials and spaces. Oversees archives and special collection digitization projects. Assists researchers with archives and special collections related requests.

 

Works with on- and off-campus donors, the university community, and others to collect, maintain, and promote university historical information and artifacts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate workflows and digitize physical archives and special collections materials of all types for digital preservation, as well as manage ongoing digitization projects.
  • Work with the Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences (DMU) campus community in adherence to the records retention policy to identify and transfer both physical and born digital university history items to the archives. 
  • Process and catalog archives and special collections materials, maintaining data and records pertaining to the archives and special collections materials including finding aids, donation records, usage statistics, and holdings within the integrated library system, the archives management system, and the institutional repository.
  • Responsible for digital archives content in the institutional repository, including developing and maintaining metadata standards and schemas.
  • Develop and oversee the physical and digital organization of archives and special collections spaces, materials, and files.
  • Ensure the longevity of archives and special collections materials through use of best practices in preservation and disaster planning.
  • Assist researchers both within the DMU community as well as alumni and community members with archives and special collections-related research requests.
  • Develop deep and broad knowledge of university history, researching and recording histories of selected topics in university history.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and professional seminars to stay current with the
  • latest developments, technologies, and best practices in archives and special collections management. 
  • Collaborate with individuals, faculty, and departments on campus to promote university history and knowledge and use of archives and special collections by offering informative and engaging presentations, classes, workshops, and tours to DMU students, faculty, staff and community groups. Design and maintain physical/digital exhibits and displays on campus.
  • Develop strong working relationships with current and potential donors of university archives and special collections materials.
  • Stay current with the latest developments, technologies, and best practices in archives and special collections management. 
  • As a member of the Library staff, this position works within the Center for Educational Enhancement (CEE) and supports the overall department mission and vision as well as Library-specific projects and tasks.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree from an American Library Association-accredited institution highly preferred.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in an academic library archive, research archive, or special collection environment preferred.
  • Experience with integrated library systems, Springshare platform, archives management systems, and institutional repository platforms preferred.

  • Excellent PC knowledge and skills; expertise with Microsoft Office products including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Experience with archival and historical documents
  • Working knowledge of current best practices in archives and special collections organization, digitization, and preservation.
  • General knowledge of methods and practices for providing archives research assistance.

Pay Rate: $26.01, after 7/1/24 $26.79

Work Schedule:  Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
