IA Shares Delivery

IA Shares is a statewide delivery service program from the State Library to provide a method of sending and receiving library materials between public libraries and the State Library. The service provides twice weekly deliveries to every public library in Iowa at no cost to libraries. The full cost of IA Shares is paid for by the State Library with a portion of its federal funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

IA Shares Delivery Days

In August 2021, IA Shares added an additional delivery day two business days after a library's current delivery day occurring at the same time as the first delivery.

About the Service

The State Library has contracted with STAT Courier to offer this service to public libraries. MOBIUS provides management services and technical support for IA Shares in partnership with STAT Courier. With a system of hubs and routes, IA Shares facilitates quick and efficient delivery of library materials. Each route begins at the hub in the morning, where items out for delivery are picked up. The driver makes the stops along the route, dropping off a tote of materials for each library, and picking up another tote of items to be sent to other public libraries or the State Library.

The driver returns to the hub at the end of the route where the items are sorted and then transported between hubs each night. The process repeats each weekday for that day's designated routes. Each route serves between 15 and 25 libraries, and there are about 35 routes needed to accommodate all of Iowa's 543 public libraries. The seven hubs include:

  • Avoca
  • Sioux Rapids
  • Des Moines
  • Iowa City
  • Ames
  • Mason City
  • Waterloo
  • Davenport

Sending Materials

To send materials, libraries must use the online MOBIUS Label Maker to select the receiving library and then print out labels (up to 4 on a letter-size piece of paper). The label slips are then inserted into the clear window on an official IA Shares delivery bag, with the item (or items) inserted into the bag and zipped closed. The bags should then be placed in the IA Shares tote and are ready to be picked up at the next scheduled delivery date and time.
